• (IFAD, 2008 -- defined as farms of two hectares or less of land)
• Support a population of roughly 2.2 billion people (Singh, 2009)
• Represent roughly 85 percent of the world’s farms
• ¾ of world’s poor are rural (smallholders, wage labour)
